Almost April??

How did this happen?  I feel like our winter/spring has been such a blur!  Here we are, almost April-- so we decided to celebrate by getting some super-special cupcakes-  "Unicorn Poop" from our local Nadia Cake cupcake shop.

With the subsequent sugar boost, Alex has been working on solving ALL of the puzzles and codes in Graeme Base's The Eleventh Hour.  A spectacular book!!

Bunnies' Big Day

Well-- it was their day to shine-- the bunnies are the ones in charge of Easter at this house.  Well....the Easter Bunny still hides the eggs, but he does so downstairs, under direction of Basil and Victor.  I don't have any egg-hunting photos, but we have some good bunny ones.

(selfie at church-- this was actually a sanctioned activity!  #easteratSOV)

We had a very nice morning at Easter service.  We came home to an egg hunt and enjoyed Easter lunch with Brad.  It was a quiet sort of Easter (nothing like being in Jerusalem), but it was very special.  Alex and I have been a bit under the weather recently, so quiet was good for us.

This year, instead of gobs and gobs of candy, the Easter Bunny left collectible Disney pins (for trading at the parks and on the cruise next year).  Of course, he still left SOME candy, but he did a great job finding a good alternative!

Nature Walk

The weather keeps fluctuating wildly.  Today was a beautiful day, so we took advantage and headed out to Carpenter Nature Center for a hike.  We enjoyed exploring a brand new (to us) trail.  My kids are 'experts' on maple syruping (thank you Somerskogen), so they felt the need to check the progress of every sap bucket on the trail.  I heard again and again from Justin (who just visited our favorite maple syrup farm with Dave last weekend) that pipeline is a WAY better way to collect sap than buckets.

We enjoyed spotting some signs of spring, talking about the "living book" we are reading in Science class (Blacky the Crow, Thornton Burgess)and Justin (my budding photographer) took some really nice photos.  Alex and Kolachi practiced some heeling exercises and we just enjoyed each other's company.

Easter Egg Hunt--

Here's a glimpse of our Easter Tree, 1 week out!
The leaves are just starting to bud--
We enjoyed our annual Easter Egg Hunt and party at church today.  There were tons of games, crafts and activities--
And, of course, enough eggs so that all 200+ kids could search and find 12 apiece!

Capturing a Leprechaun

Alex (and then Justin) spent the entire afternoon yesterday constructing an elaborate leprechaun trap on the front porch.  I wasn't quite sure what we would do with one if we caught it.....

So it's OK that he escaped.  The kids DID observe that he left a slight trace of fairy dust behind--

Because we didn't have a captured leprechaun to spread some St. Patrick's Day magic, we baked some cookies and left them on the neighbor's doorsteps to spread our some of our OWN ....

More experiments--- stalactites

The kids have been on an experiment kick, and we recently formed our own stalactites using epsom salts and yarn!  It took about four days to grow to this length, and it was a fun project to constantly 'check on'.  We are planning a cave unit of study (culminating in a visit to Karchner Caverns in Arizona this spring), so this was a perfect lead-in!

Alex's First Science Fair

Alex's neighbor friend Ana invited her to participate in the local Science Fair.  The girls decided to do a project that revolved around their dogs, and they worked very hard doing the background research, forming the experiment, conducting the experiment and recording their observations.

There were SO many people there!  It was really well attended.  The only disappointment was that the girls were under the assumption that their project would be judged and they would be given feedback.  There was no rubric or feedback given by the 'judges'-- only participation ribbons awarded!

As you can tell, I've been REALLY busy at home this winter.  We're trying to go through the konmari method (google it-- it's magic!), and that has sucked up every moment of my non schooling "free time".  We did manage to make it to the zoo today to enjoy our first glimpse at Spring!

The outdoor playground wasn't officially open yet, but we made do with the boulder park.  The kids played here for about thirty minutes while I just soaked up the sunshine!

Justin has an affinity for both sharks and wolves.  "Wolfy" joined us on our trip here today (J carried him in his Ergo) and needed to have his portrait taken with the bronze wolf pack.
