The "Better" kind of snow play

While I ran around dropping Alex off at preschool, working out at the gym and finishing various errands, Justin got to spend the whole morning with Auntie Rorie. One of their activities was some more snow play...only this time we brought the snow to Justin. Rorie reported that he really liked it when she mixed in some powdered cranberry juice packets to the snow. He also did a fair amount of drawing today. Here is Ze Artist's first 'solo piece', completed in crayon.

Welcome Home, Auntie Rorie!

Auntie Rorie returned from her Interim in India, and brought back a Salwar Kurti fit for a princess for Alexandra. She was so excited to wear it to school today (with a long underwear shirt underneath, of course). She woke up at 6 to put it on, ate breakfast and then decided that it was 'too fancy' for school, so took the top off. She did wear the leggings to school, but reported that she did "not feel like a princess because she was Alex" at the end of the day.
Starting off the morning with some weaving. We'll get this rug finished eventually!

From Sandcastles to Snowmen

We're still slightly mourning the loss of our immediate beach access, but trying to make the most of the little bit of snow we do have. Alex is normally out in it at school, and when the weather is 'warm' (20 degrees and above), she and a little neighbor will play outside. Justin was not about to sit around indoors this afternoon. We got geared-up and went out with the girls.

The first Justin snow expedition. He didn't really move from this 'sea lion' posture. Between the mitts and the snowsuit and the resistance from the snow, it wasn't going to happen.
This is pretty fun!
Not convinced that making a snowman is the best idea. And outside playtime is done. Not happy out, not happy that Sister didn't come back in with him.
It will be MUCH more fun once you start walking, bud!

A Taste of Summer

After taking a few days to recuperate (ie: do laundry) from our beach vacation, it was time to get back into our rhythm. Since we'd had an early taste of summer weather, it was on our minds and we decided to use some of our home-preserved summer blueberry sauce to make some fancy desserts in the antique tart tins that Great-Grandma Alice gave us. This was the perfect project for Alex-- she could be fully involved in every step of the process.

I do have to admit that we used pre-made pie crust. Someone had left some in our fridge after the holidays, and 'waste not, want not', right? The result: Delicious! (Another confession: we spent so much time making these fancy tarts that I forgot about fixing dinner, so we ate frozen chicken nuggets and a bagged salad ;-P)

Ft. Lauderdale- Day Four: Sandcastles and Moats

After our exciting Duck Boat morning, it was time to get back to 'work'. Uncle Willy, Daddy and Alex jumped right in making a huge sandcastle and moat. The tide was coming up, so it was a race against time! We had to test out the moat to make sure it worked....so Justin was our guinea pig. ;-) It held! (but wasn't too terribly tasty).

Ft. Lauderdale- Day Four: Quack, Quack, Quack

We finally convinced Alex to leave the hotel grounds! She has been adament that we "not drive anywhere", and frankly, who could blame her? Today, however, we headed to the touristy part of Ft. Lauderdale beach to catch a ride on a duck boat. Uncle Willy was convinced that it would actually be driven by a Duck, but Alex wasn't too sure. Turns out she was right. Justin was soo sleepy that he contentedly napped in the Ergo for the majority of the tour.

Not a duck, but the closest we saw.

Ft. Lauderdale- Day Three: More of the Same

The true definition of a vacation is lazing around with no schedule. Uncle Willy joined us this afternoon, and that was the only thing we were really waiting for! We enjoyed beach time with Grams and Great-Grams and lazy river time with Gramps and Uncle Willy. The weather was perfect, and we are dreading returning to the snow!

Ft. Lauderdale- Day Two: Beach, Lazy River, Pool....repeat.

Apparently our kids didn't get the 'you get to sleep in a whole HOUR! memo. They, in fact, must be on the mailing list for a different time zone altogether, because instead of sleeping IN they were UP a whole hour earlier than normal (5 am MN time!).Every cloud has a silver lining, though, and after Dave and I quit grumbling and shook the sleep out of our eyes we were able to truly appreciate a magnificent sunrise. It's not often in my day-to-day life that I take the time to savor God's majesty and creation. Wow!
The rest of our day consisted of beach, lazy river, pool, snack, repeat... Not a much better way to unwind!

We were out on the beach before the tractors were there to 'rake' the gifts from the night's tide. We did have to be a bit cautious, because there were quite a few of these beautiful creatures who had washed up. Luckily they were bright blue and easy to spot!

Ft. Lauderdale- Day One: Afternoon on the beach!

Gramps met us at the airport and, after a quick stop at the local grocery store for some rations, showed us to the condo, which is actually a hotel. If anyone needs to rent a FABULOUS room on the Ft. Lauderdale beach, give me an email and I'll hook you up with contact info! The room the Grams & Gramps bought at the Pelican Grand is amazing-- I'll let the next few days of photos convince you!

After unpacking, we headed down to the beach.

But first, sunscreen application. This was about as easy as diapering a cat.The payoff:

Sheer joy!

(As an aside, Justin's amber teething anklet arrived just in time for the flight. Normally it is hidden under his sock so he doesn't look like such a 'hippie baby'....but I have to admit I think it's kind of cute!)
